Alyth Community Woodland Mission Statement

March 2011

Alyth Community Woodland – A Natural Community Resource

Alyth Community Woodland will provide a multi-functional, sustainable community resource for the long-term benefit of the residents of Alyth and surrounds. The woodland will be a safe, quiet, natural, green environment for people and wildlife to enjoy. Our six objectives are:

Health: We aim to encourage the use of the outdoors and increase health and wellbeing of residents by providing facilities for exercise in a peaceful, natural environment.

Education: The woodland will be used as an educational resource to increase awareness and respect of our natural heritage and provide opportunities for young people to gain experience in rural crafts and sports (specifically excluding field sports and motorised sports).

Biodiversity: Through diverse habitat creation within the woodland we aim to sustain wildlife and increase local biodiversity.

Food: Through the planting of an orchard, trees and shrubs for natural foraging and provision of allotment space the woodland will improve local food security and reduce food miles.

Fuel: By planting trees for coppicing the woodland will provide a sustainable source of wood-fuel for use locally.

Tourism: The woodland and its facilities will be promoted as a tourist attraction, providing an economic boost for local businesses through increased visitors to the town.
